Start at the mixer

Everything plugs into the Behringer XR12. It sits at the center of your setup, near a power outlet.

STEP 2 · TROUBLESHOOT

Something not right?

Find what you’re hearing. Work through the checks in order; most problems are solved in the first two.

  1. Microphone or phone
  2. Cable
  3. Mixer
  4. Cable
  5. Speaker
No sound? Start at the left and check each link until you find the break.
No sound at allFollow the signal from the microphone or phone to the speaker and check each link.
  1. Make sure every piece is plugged into power and its power light is on.
  2. Turn the speaker’s volume knob up to about halfway.
  3. On the mixer, raise the main volume and the channel you’re using, and make sure nothing is muted.
  4. Push each XLR cable in until it clicks. A loose connector is the most common cause.
  5. On a wireless microphone, check that the handheld is switched on.
  6. Still silent? Swap the cable for another one to rule out a bad cable.
Squealing or howling (feedback)The microphone is hearing the speaker. Change the position before changing the volume.
  1. Keep speakers in front of the people using microphones, never behind them.
  2. Don’t point a microphone at a speaker, and don’t cup the top of the microphone with your hand.
  3. Hold the microphone close to your mouth so it can be turned down.
  4. Lower the microphone’s volume a little until the squeal stops.
Wireless microphone cuts outUsually batteries or something between the microphone and its receiver.
  1. Put fresh batteries in the handheld microphone.
  2. Keep the receiver out in the open with its antennas upright, not inside a cabinet or behind a wall.
  3. Keep a clear line of sight between the person speaking and the receiver.
  4. Turn the handheld off and on again, and check the receiver shows a signal.
Microphones work but music doesn’tThe music path is separate from the microphones, so check it on its own.
  1. Turn your phone or laptop volume all the way up and make sure it isn’t connected to Bluetooth headphones.
  2. Check the audio cable is pushed fully into both your device and the mixer or speaker.
  3. Raise the channel the music is plugged into.
  4. Try a different song or app to rule out the source.
Sound is distorted or cracklySomething in the chain is turned up too far, or a cable is failing.
  1. Turn down the channel that sounds distorted, then raise the speaker volume if you need more.
  2. Keep your phone near full volume and set the level on the mixer instead.
  3. If it crackles when a cable moves, swap that cable.
One speaker is silentFind out whether the problem is the speaker or its cable.
  1. Check that speaker’s power light and volume knob.
  2. Swap the two speaker cables at the mixer. If the problem moves to the other side, it’s the mixer output or cable; if it stays, it’s that speaker.
  3. Push both ends of that speaker’s XLR cable in until they click.
Humming or buzzingOften a power or cable layout issue.
  1. Plug the mixer and speakers into outlets in the same room where possible.
  2. Keep audio cables from running alongside power cords for long distances.
  3. Swap any cable that buzzes when you touch or move it.
The iPad isn’t controlling the mixerThe iPad talks to the XR12 over the mixer’s own Wi-Fi network.
  1. Make sure the mixer is on. Its Wi-Fi network takes a minute to appear after power-on.
  2. On the iPad, open Settings, then Wi-Fi, and choose the mixer’s network.
  3. Close and reopen the mixer app.
  4. Stay within the same room as the mixer.
A loud pop when turning things on or offPower order matters.
  1. Turn the mixer on first and the speakers last.
  2. When you’re done, turn the speakers off first and the mixer last.
  3. Keep the speaker volume down while plugging or unplugging cables.
